Canada Newswire — May 30, 2005.   Six of Canada’s best high school mathematics students have been chosen to represent their country at the 46th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The IMO is the world championship mathematics competition for high school students and is being held this year in Mérida, Mexico from July 8 to July 19. The six students will be attending a special IMO Training Camp at the University of Calgary and the Banff International Research Station from June 25 to July 10.

Government of Alberta — May 9, 2005.  
Six finalists have been chosen for the first annual award recognizing outstanding employers in the accommodation industry. The Workplace Hospitality Employer of Excellence and Leadership (WHEEL) award was created by Alberta Human Resources and Employment and the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association. In the Canada Select (3.5 stars and under) category, the finalists are: Delta Bow Valley, Delta Calgary Airport, The Banff Centre.

Gramophone— May 5, 2005. The Avery Fisher artist programme has announced this year’s career grant recipients: violinist James Ehnes, cellist Priscilla Lee, the Miró Quartet, and pianist Shai Wosner. Designed to give professional assistance and recognition to rising young instrumentalists, the Lincoln Center programme broke new ground this year by awarding a grant to a chamber music ensemble for the first time. The award carries a US$15,000 stipend..… Formed at Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1995, the Miró Quartet (violinists Daniel Ching and Sandy Yamamoto, violist John Largess, and cellist Josh Gindele) is currently on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin. The group’s other awards include first prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 1998 and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 2000.
